Aerobics can be a fun and effective way to get in shape. Aerobic exercises have been around for over 150 years, but haven’t been practiced consistently. It is now being prescribed as a treatment option for anemia, osteoporosis, and obesity. In general, aerobic exercise consists of rhythmic muscle activity that increases the heart rate and breathing in air in combination with moderate physical exertion. There are many methods to choose from when starting aerobic exercise; however, we recommend one of these three: (1) brisk walk (2) stationary bike (3) elliptical trainer or treadmill at the gym. The first two methods describe how to walk or ride a bike. The third describes how to run or walk on the treadmill. It is recommended that you start with brisk walking for this program. After you are comfortable with brisk walking, then you can increase intensity by adding pedaling resistance, speed, and distance.For proper form when participating in aerobic exercises, be sure to breathe through your nose. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth while exercising at the gym or home. Additionally, do not hold your breath when exercising. If you hold your breath, it will cause dizziness and possible dizziness should lead to fainting. You will need to purchase new shoes for aerobic exercises. This is because you will be walking, running, or pedaling intensely enough to wear out your current running or walking shoes. The foot is the body part most commonly injured during aerobic exercise. If your feet hurt while performing aerobic exercises at home or during the gym, do not continue exercising until they are better.
